Likewise, a top listing for a search term that isn't entirely relevant to your site won't do you any good, no matter how many people search for it.
Google has a tool that lets you find the number of people searching for any word or phrase. Then you can find phrases that a) are highly relevant to your site and b) attract more searches
To access this tool, just type "Google Keyword Tool" into Google and click on the top list.
Note: Try to choose less competitive keywords. Most have 2 or 3 words. It will be very easy for them to get top listing in Google. The "Advertiser Competition" bar in the left-hand column of the Google Keyword Tool gives you an idea of this
2) Pepper your website with the phrases you identified above.
This step is called "on-page optimization" and tells Google what search terms to list your website for. Limit the number of search terms you want to get top listings to 2 or 3 per page of your website.
